Where to swim in Lisbon: pools, ocean pools and river beaches
Municipal pools, the Oeiras ocean pool and river beaches — where to actually swim when the ocean is cold.
Lisbon sits on the water but not always in it: the Tagus in the city is a port, not a beach, and the Atlantic beaches require a trip. For actual swimming — laps, kids, or just cooling off — here's where residents go.
Municipal pools (Piscinas Municipais)
The city's Complexo de Piscinas do Campo Grande, next to the Campo Grande gardens (metro: Campo Grande / Entre Campos), is the big one — outdoor pools in summer, indoor options, grass to lie on, and very reasonable municipal prices. It's the closest thing Lisbon has to a lido, and in July it becomes a neighbourhood in itself.
Beyond Campo Grande, the council runs smaller pools across parishes — opening seasons and lap-swim schedules shift, so check the current list and hours on the municipal site before heading over. For serious lane swimming year-round, the covered pools at the university stadium (Estádio Universitário) are the other resident staple.
Piscina Oceânica de Oeiras
Just outside the city on the Cascais line — Piscina Oceânica, next to Praia da Torre in Oeiras, is a salt-water ocean pool: seawater, filtered, with none of the wind and waves. Take the CP train from Cais do Sodré toward Cascais and get off at Oeiras or Santo Amaro, then walk ten minutes. It's the best compromise between "real sea swim" and "pool with lanes", and it's open through the bathing season. Check current season dates and entry conditions.
River beaches — the honest context
The Tagus inside Lisbon is not swimmable and nobody local pretends otherwise. The nearest legal river-beach alternatives are downstream — the Oeiras ocean pool above, or the proper Atlantic beaches of the Cascais line (Carcavelos, Estoril, Cascais) and Costa da Caparica on the south bank, all under an hour by public transport. For wilder river swimming you need to leave the metro area entirely.
What to bring
- Swim cap — mandatory at most municipal pools in Portugal; they're sold on site but bring your own.
- Flip-flops and a padlock or small bag for locker rooms at the municipal complexes.
- The Navegante card works for the CP train to Oeiras; zapping is fine for occasional trips.
- A windbreaker for the ocean pool — the same nortada that hits the beaches blows across the pool deck.
Practical notes
Municipal pools run on lane schedules — morning and lunch sessions are for lap swimmers, afternoons for families. Summer weekends at Campo Grande fill early; weekday evenings are the resident's hour. All timings and prices change seasonally — check current hours before setting out.
