Lisbon's miradouros, ranked by usefulness
Six viewpoints, ranked by what they're actually good for — sunset, quiet, or the postcard view.
Every list of Lisbon viewpoints tells you which ones exist. This one tells you which one to go to, depending on what you want: a sunset with a crowd, a quiet bench, or the full postcard panorama. Ranked from most useful to most niche.
1. Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara — best all-rounder
Above Restauradores at the edge of Bairro Alto, a two-level garden with a tiled map identifying every monument in sight — Sé, Castle, the bridge, the whole downtown grid. Usefulness rating: highest. It works at any hour, it's free, and it doubles as an orientation tool for the city. Go at golden hour for the light on the castle hill; it faces east, so it's a sunrise/morning-light spot too.
2. Miradouro das Portas do Sol — best classic view
In Alfama, with the white rooftops, the monastery of São Vicente de Fora and the Tagus laid out like a film set. Tram 28 passes right by, which is both the charm and the problem — it's rarely empty. Usefulness: go early morning or late evening when the tour groups are gone, and it's unbeatable. There's a kiosk café for a coffee or a glass of wine with the view.
3. Miradouro da Graça (Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen) — best local atmosphere
A pine-shaded terrace in Graça looking across to São Jorge Castle and the bridge. This is where the neighbourhood actually goes: late afternoons fill with residents, there's a café kiosk, and it never feels staged. Usefulness: best sunset-with-locals option, and the most pleasant to sit in for an hour.
4. Miradouro da Nossa Senhora do Monte — best panorama, fewest people
The highest viewpoint in Lisbon, next to the small chapel on the hill above Graça. The sweep covers downtown, the castle, the Avenida Almirante Reis valley and the river. Fewer tourists make the climb, which is exactly the point. Usefulness: best for a quiet, wide view; bring water — the walk up is real, and shade is limited.
5. Miradouro de Santa Luzia — best tilework setting
Just below Portas do Sol in Alfama, a smaller terrace with a pergola, bougainvillea and azulejo panels depicting Praça do Comércio before the 1755 earthquake. Usefulness: more romantic than practical — good for a short stop on the way through Alfama rather than a destination sunset.
6. Miradouro de Santa Catarina (Adamastor) — best end-of-day hangout
Between Bairro Alto and Cais do Sodré, looking over the port and the south bank. Usefulness: not the best view on this list, but the best vibe after 6pm — people bring drinks from the kiosk and sit on the ground. A meeting point more than a viewpoint.
Getting there
Most are walkable from Martim Moniz, Rossio or Baixa-Chiado metro, or the tram 28 route. Note: Lisbon's funiculars and street elevators (Glória, Bica, Lavra, Graça) have been suspended since the fatal Glória accident in September 2025 — check current status before counting on them; the 55E bus currently replaces the Graça elevator, and Graça/Senhora do Monte are also served by tuk-tuk or a steep but short walk from Martim Moniz.
